Tenants Rights Volunteer Coordinator

Two tenants rights organizations in San Francisco — the San Francisco Tenants Union (SFTU) and the Eviction Defense Collaborative (EDC) — are seeking a Volunteer Coordinator to work half time at each organization. These positions offer the unique opportunity to be at the heart of two organizations that play critical roles in the fight for tenants rights and saving homes in San Francisco and build upon the long-standing collaborative relationship between the two groups.

THE ORGANIZATIONS

Since 1971, the San Francisco Tenants Union, a membership-supported and volunteer-based collective, has been the city's leading advocate for tenants. The SFTU provides counseling on tenants rights under the San Francisco Rent Ordinance (which limits rent increases and evictions), and also protections under state law. This counseling is provided by volunteers who staff shifts at our drop-in clinic or counsel members by phone. For more information on the SFTU please visit our website at http://www.sftu.org.

The Eviction Defense Collaborative is the principal agency in San Francisco assisting tenants to respond to eviction lawsuits. The EDC provides advocacy, information, hands-on assistance, referrals, and limited representation to low-income and indigent tenants who are facing eviction, and also administers one-time rental assistance to help tenants stay in their homes. The work at the EDC is made possible by a small staff and many volunteers. The work environment at the EDC is collegial, and we work as a team to help the tenants who seek our assistance. For more information about the EDC please visit: http://evictiondefense.org.
